W.J. Francin 1963. California Quail. June 16. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1944. Noted a β in "Guard" posture in low weeds in E-1, out of sight at 1946. 1947. Red β came from vicinity of E-9 root to feed in D-3, and another β left root to the ground nearby. 1953 - Red β ran to E-9 root and fl ew up into it. 1959. A β left the weed patch in D-1, ran very rapidly to root E-9 and fl ew into it. Within seconds the Red β ran from secret area to feeding in E-2. 1965 checked nest in C-10 after searching C-1, D-1, E-1 for possible nest. C-10 nest had hatched, with remains of 12 shells there, no unhatched e ggs. June 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0857. Heard one bird giving Cw.' call south of Behavin hab. pen. No birds in the span in the pen, but a lone β was walking across the top of the pen. 0906 Red β running along fence in E-2. β incubating nest in A-3. 0930 Heard many "peet" calls, coming from about area E-4, and apparently two birds.
