California Quail
June 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
emerged from cover since previous note;
calls heard outside intermittently
during this period. 0810 Red ? ran
across clearing from D-8 to E-2.
0848 No further activity or calls, ended
observation.
1325. A pair of birds were resting on
the concrete next to observation hut, in
area A-2, could not see color bands.
1330 I attempted to catch here
by hand on the nest, but both
flushed when my hand was
within a few inches. Photographed
nest & eggs with 35mm B&W and
with movie Technichrome; A-3 nest
first, then C-10 nest. These still
had 18 and 17 eggs respectively.
1420 a ? with dark band not clearly
seen (either Black or dirty 05) came
out of weeds in D-6, fed in the
open for a moment, then perched
on the instrument shelter for a while
and flew across to area B-2, and
then resumed incubating the A-3 nest.
1925. "Guardian" ? flew from A-1 to
lower part of pen as I approached.
