California Quail
June 11. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
in area D-7 gave three assembly calls,
then walked back into weedy cover.
0900 On leaving the lab I heard
a Crow! call to the south,
and again saw a pair on the
road to the west.
June 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
0645 Outside the Behrman hole heard
two birds give respectively Crow! and
Assembly calls. One I was standing
on an earth mound (guardian?)
near population pits, a second
flew to the top of the quail pen.
In the pen 2 birds flew from A-1 to
the bottom of the pen. 0655 I
checked the nest in A-3; a bird
ran off through the grass as I
approached, while the hen re-
maimed on the nest. A series of
Crow!, Assembly, and some Squill
calls were heard just outside the
pen. 0702 Two birds flew into
the E-9 Eucalyptus, two others into
weed patch in D-8. I entered the
pen to set the Fairley traps, and two
moles ran out of D-8 after a few
Squill calls. 0740 'No birds have
