California Quail.
June 10. Strawberry Camp, Alameda County,
calling - probably a "guardian" cock,
a single ? in center clearing of the
quail pen. 0905 Several nearby
Cow! and assembly calls. A pair
of birds (not clearly distinguished
by colors, but believed to be Yellow-03)
crossed the clearing and went
into weed patch in D-7,8. Search
of this and other areas revealed
no nest, failed to flush this
cpair or any other birds. Both
birds incubating previously found
ests. Cow calls frequent at-
side the pen, one from a ?
perched on the wire netting
top of the pen.
June 11. Strawberry Camp, Alameda Co.
0810 No quail calls heard on arrival
at behavior lab. Many song-birds
heard. A pair of quail ran along
access road from outside the fence
to the best population pits west of
the quail pen. Four birds in the pen
flew from center into weeds at
bottom of pen. I immediately checked
both nests and found the hens on
them, so these 4 were probably
the 4 males. 0850 Unidentified ?
