W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail. June 10. Strawberry Camp, Alameda County, calling - probably a "guardian" cock, a single ? in center clearing of the quail pen. 0905 Several nearby Cow! and assembly calls. A pair of birds (not clearly distinguished by colors, but believed to be Yellow-03) crossed the clearing and went into weed patch in D-7,8. Search of this and other areas revealed no nest, failed to flush this cpair or any other birds. Both birds incubating previously found ests. Cow calls frequent at- side the pen, one from a ? perched on the wire netting top of the pen. June 11. Strawberry Camp, Alameda Co. 0810 No quail calls heard on arrival at behavior lab. Many song-birds heard. A pair of quail ran along access road from outside the fence to the best population pits west of the quail pen. Four birds in the pen flew from center into weeds at bottom of pen. I immediately checked both nests and found the hens on them, so these 4 were probably the 4 males. 0850 Unidentified ?
