California Quail
March 7. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
walked down brushy slope, across canyon
and sat down near edge of stubble
field. 1405. Just over ridge of brushy
hill from spring, flushed 30-40 birds
of covey fairly (well concentrated in
brush. On next slope over, saw a
pair together on the ground.
1730 Baited feeding area in front
of house. Observed a pair on the road,
another in back of house. By 1800
something over 50 birds were feeding
together (accurate count impossible
because birds were continually moving
into & out of brush) in very nearly
equal sex ratio. Among early
arrivals, many arrived in 3-4
pairs (at least 4 pairs in first
dozzen birds). Pairs did not remain
together while feeding; about 3
pairs remained outside the covey
and always in pairs. 1805 Counted
about 60, after which about 10
moved away towards pool area,
and 10 moved in from brush.
1806 Male birds nesting in fine brush -
all these randomly mixed as
to sex. 1808 Still more additions -
groups of 10-12 birds.
