W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail June 4. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1920. A ♂ flew into a Eucalyptus west of Behavior Lab. gate, another ♂ into a Eucalyptus just south of the gate. In the pen, ♀ on the nest in A-3 - I did not disturb her at this time; no other birds in sight. 1940 Green ♂ flew to water-hole, then crossed to tall weeds in E-6. 1942 Orange ♂ on top of large instrument shelter, until 1944. Both he + Green ♂ came into open briefly. 1946 Red ♂ came from East corner into center clearing. 1950 a pair (03 ♂ and Yellow ♀) came into clearing and began feeding; Green ♂ emerged from weeds and chased Red ♂ from pool. 1957 Yellow ♀ + 03 ♂ copulated. 2003 All birds at flight in cover, except Green ♂ in A-1. 2010 Checked nest - ♀ ran off when I reached hand toward her. Still 18 eggs in nest, plus are egg on ground about 5 feet from the nest, in the open; this egg weighed 9.1 gms. June 5. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0830 No birds in the pen in the Be- havior Lab pen, and no calls heard in the vicinity. ♀ on the nest in A-3.
