W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail. May 27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. don close to E-9 roost. Heard a series of 2 squill notes at 1959 birds began to enter the roost. May 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0830 Saw one pair along road and heard no calls outside the behavior lab. No birds were in sight in the behavior lab pen. 0930 Flushed 2 B's and a 9 only when I approached very close in fleck patch of Vicia and Ceramica in area A-10. The remaining birds remained well hidden and did not move from cover although I covered the entire pen super- ficially. I hope this indicates that birds are on nests either laying or incubating 0935 Heard one 'Caw.' call outside of Be- havin lab. 1913 A pair of birds flushed from just outside the fence of the behavior lab pen. In the pen, no birds in sight and no calls heard anywhere in the vicinity. 1922 A 8 appeared in E-1, then ran into weed patch, then Green-Black pair came into the open to feed in same area.
