California Quail
May 26. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
nearly fence posts. They were dis-
turbed by my movements and
flew down the hill accompanied
by two females which had remained
concealed in the grass. Calls con-
tinued till I left at 0750, including
many "Cow!"s, several "squills", and
some "assembly"s, and a few
birds seen feeding.
1720 Stopped by Iven's widwill
on the way out to see brood noted
on Friday. Saw one & in grass
who ran back into brush followed
by 2 half-grown young - noises in
the brush indicated the rest of
the brood were in there.
May 27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1915 Saw 4 scattered pairs in the
vicinity of Pine Grove picnic area,
and heard a bird giving assembly
call. Near entrance to Belairin
Lubr. a single bird flew down -
hill, and a Cow! call was
heard shortly after, and a
squill note closer to the
pen. 1924. On the pen
