Saw one & in grass who ran back into brush followed by 2 half-grown young - noises in the brush indicated the rest of the brood were in there. May 27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1915 Saw 4 scattered pairs in the vicinity of Pine Grove picnic area, and heard a bird giving assembly call. Near entrance to Belairin Lubr. a single bird flew down - hill, and a Cow! call was heard shortly after, and a squill note closer to the pen. 1924. On the pen 3 birds were in sight.
