W. J. Francis 1963 California Quail. May 25: McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co., to the first cattle guard. At the ranch house heard a bird cow- calling 1935 to 1845 observed from hill overlooking Maria Spring. Saw 9 pairs and one single male feeding, heard about two miles cow-calling from time to time and occasional assembly calls. Although pairs were all well separated, with two ex- captains when two pairs come quite close together in feeding, some antagonism was evidenced by fairly frequent squill calls. There were not given by any birds in sight. May 26. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. 0630 Heard cow-calling by three different birds on opposite slope across Maria Spring, and saw a pair of birds feeding on the hillside this side of the spring near my observation point. These birds remained in the vicinity some time, with the male perched on a fence post about 0700. At 0725, when I moved about in the process of taking temperature readings, there were 2 males in
