California Quail
May 25. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.,
1528. Make a fence post flew down
into grass, then into road to feed
with other 5 birds. Within less
than a minute, another 8 flew to
a post about 50 feet away, and
a 9 came at 4 grass to join
lost 8 on the ground. Now
3 pairs plus a 8 on the road, one
8 on fence post (2nd post east
from corner where I am parked) -
previous kind or 5th post north.
1532. At least 3 more birds
in road, 8 off fence post; used
a pair in the open below quail
enclosure, 9 feeding, 8 standing
crest facing direction of a cow
call. 1533. A 8 on fence post
(5th north), flew down in about 50
seconds. 1536 7 88 and 3 9f
in the road. After a pair + 1 8
moved up to quail enclosure,
another 9 appeared near one 8,
to correct count to 4 pairs plus
3 8's. Quail then gradually
dispersed, 3 pair coming quite
close to car, and I took movies
of one male. 1605 When leaving
I saw 6 pairs and 2 other 8's
along the road from old house
