W.N. Francis 1963 California Quail May 25. Devil's Den, Kern County. from different spots in brushy areas. As I climbed up the canyon I again flushed the big brush which flew off in two coverys of about 25 each. These all appeared to be adults, no sign of any family grouping. Back at the upper water drum at 6650, a pair ran up the trail. Assembly calls but no cow calls were heard in the covey. May 25. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. Observed 1100 to 1220 at Merian Spring, with negative result except for a few birds calling. 1430 Observing near old granary. In the quail enclosure I heard many clicks + glimpsed a couple of birds running through the brush but none flushed and I could see no broods. At 1500 Two pair of quail came running down the road toward the car parked at the bend of the dirt road near the windmill. One pair turned and ran up to the quail enclosure. As
