California Quail.
Mar.7. Hastings Reservation Monterey Co,
flight into adjacent brush. 3
birds remained on the ground - 1
♂ and 1 ♀ (about six feet apart)
in open and 1 ♀ under a
shrub. after a minute these all
walked into the brush. 0705 After
leaving area briefly returned to observe
14 quail (7 each sex) feeding same
place. Sexes almost randomly dis-
tributed but two pair observed feeding
close together and somewhat apart
from main group. 0708 Birds took alarm
and ran and flew back into brush; a
few seconds afterward a single
bird (watchman?) flew from an
isolated shrub at edge of feeding
area into the brush. 0712 One or
more birds flew from clearing
under oak trees back toward
brush. Observed 2 ♂ followed
closely by 2 ♀ feeding in this
same clearing, walking off toward
abandoned shack. Also heard several
birds flying (probably same ones).
Several alarm calls heard, following
by "talking"
