California Quail.
May 24. Devil's Den, Kern County,
gather flew from the top of the ridge.
all eight birds flew downhill
to west, none took water. At 1944
another pair crossed the ridge
beyond the water drain, and at
1950 a single 8; these birds
did not even approach water and
made no indication of noticing
my presence, but flew downhill like the others. No other
birds appeared as I observed
until 2004. Indications are
that these birds were going to
roost in the bottom of Kee
Canyon. 15 birds in all were
seen, seven pairs and a
single 8, all without young.
May 25. Devil's Den, Kern County.
0545- Saw about 12 quail at
the lower water drain, a pair plus
a single bird at the upper drain.
0600 A covey of about 50 birds
worked their way up the ravine
above the artificial roost. This
area had a fair amount of
Eriogonum with seeds. At 0608
as I entered the area the covey
had left, about 6 pairs flew
