W.J. Francis 1963 79. California Quail May 22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. is apparently a roost. May 23. Thurs. Strawberry Canyon Alameda County. 0815 Heard 4 different birds Crow calling near the west gate of the behavior lab. In the pen, all birds appeared to be ant foraging, 2 pair flew into cover as I ap- proached. Green-Blade were feeding just in front of observation window and moved to water pool, and single ♂ foraged around the edges of the clearing. 0840 One pair at water hole ♂ reappearing with squill call to a calling bird outside, second pair feeding in D-4 to D-7, third pair near gate in A-1 with ♂ running along fence as bird outside called, and single ♂ moving around cleared area. All 6 birds closely associated in pairs, with pairs well-separated. 1950. No birds in sight in the pen; heard one distant call and saw one bird run into underbrush just outside of Behavior lab gate. 1957 Orange ♂ flew from lower part of the pen to top of the large instrument shelter and there
