California Quail.
May 21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.,
1725 in the pen the Green-Black
pair were scratching in dirt of a
Gopher mound and foraging in
E2 and C-1, till 1728; another
pair was briefly seen in E-1 before
going into Medicago patch.
1753 Saw 11 quail in a brush
feeding under pines in picnic area,
generally in pairs but no autagamic
shown.
May 22. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
1905. 7 or 8 quail feeding in Pine
Grove picnic area near Belaria Lab.
Assembly call heard twice, one distant
Cow call. Calls heard from two
other locations curate Belaria Lab.
In the pen at least 5 birds were
in the pen at 1918, and were
somewhat disturbed by my
approach. Two pairs soon re-
sumed feeding in D-7. 1925
Green-Black pair came to water
hole, followed by Orange-65 at
1927. Pairs remained close together,
but displayed no autagamic as
they passed very close to each
