1963.
California Quail
May20. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.,
in area A-1, the other six in
C-1 to E-1, loosely bunched,
The birds were somewhat disturbed
by my approach and retreated
near or into covering weeds. No
calls heard this evening so far.
From 1920 to 1933 no birds were
seen, then Red ♂ came into center
of pen briefly, and ran back into
weeds in about 3 minutes. 1944
Glimpsed 2 pair (a more) along fence
in E-1, nearly concealed. 1953 These
birds began feeding were actively
and moved toward open areas,
remaining in a rather loose group without
obvious pairing. 1959. ♂ and
Yellow ♀ abored away from the others
and ran to roosting shrub, which
♀ flew into at 2000 (eucalyptus in E-9).
The other 4 walked or ran to D-4
eucalyptus, and went to roost there;
two birds used small shelter as
stepping stone to enter the roost; all
in except Red ♂ (not seen) at 2005.
May21. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Cnty.
1715 Saw single ♂ just inside euc-
lavin lub-fence and a pair in
road near quail pen, no calls heard,
