California Quail.
May 20, Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
0820 Saw 2 pairs foraging and heard
nearby calls in Pine Grove picnic
area, and saw two other birds on
dirt road outside of Behavior Lab.
In the pen, Red 7 was by the
gate in A-1, the 3 other pairs
distributed along NW fence. Birds
were quite inactive but not sec-
tive, doing a little pacing, but
mostly standing still with feathers
fluffed out against cold and
damp. About 0830 Red 7
began series of Cow! calls - at
first widely spaced, then with
intervals stabilized at 15 seconds.
He did not change location
but remained hunched on the
ground, only raising his head
and stretching his neck while
giving the call. 0845 Outside
the Behavior Lab heard cow calls,
and saw at least 4 pairs foraging
in picnic area.
1900. Saw two pairs foraging in
picnic area. 2 more pairs near the
Behavior Lab, south west gate, and
seven birds in a brush flushed
from grass near the gate. In
