California Quail
Mar. 6. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co.
walked across clearing uphill following
route of previous birds
1152 Counted 7 quail crossing
clearing in chamise slope just south
of "Quail Hollow" (roost area). Also
heard quail "talking" and rustling
leaves; may have been whole covey.
Took station on hillside near
roost area about 5 p.m. and waited
for birds to come to roost. At
1812 most of the covey passed
within 20 feet, along edge of
clearing, led by 4 males;
apparently catching sight of me,
they flew at me into someting
trees, scattering into 2 or 3 coves.
About 3 to 5 other birds trailed
at a distance & were not clearly
seen, but were definitely not in
pairs.
March 7. Hastings Reservation, Monterey
County. 0655 Quail covey feeding
on grassy bench immediately back
of Davis house. As I was proceeding
up the road to Red house, on
S-west side of this area, first indi-
cation was an alarm call after
which the covey of 12-14 birds took
