W.J. Francis 1963. California Quail May 13. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0810 Heard two birds giving "Cow!" calls outside of pen at Behavioral, saw one male perched on fence of Lab., and another flew from near the quail pen. Single F in the pen was patrolling the NW fence and giving "Cow!" calls. 0827 Two pairs feeding on green vegetation together along fence in E-10 and D-10. One pair of these engaged largely in preening till 0839, another 7 simply seated, and other birds were out of sight. 0844. Cow calls heard nearby. 0915 No further activity, only one pair in sight crumpled together on ground, feathers fluffed out. 0920 Outside the Lab., heard cow calls and saw about 6-8 birds along road in Eucalyptus opposite Pine Grove picnic area. May 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 1600 Five birds in the open space in center of pen: Green & Black together, Red F feeding very near OS F with no reaction from her mate Orange. After a few minutes, she moved nearer her mate & they both went to water pool while Green & Black dust bathed and Red F wandered
