California Quail
May 12. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
1545. One ♂ was in the dust bath
as I approached, and ran into
cover. Right afterwards I saw two
pairs along the SE fence. In the
pen at 1600, disturbed 7 birds leaf-
ing ♂ in the east corner (E-10).
Grain that had been just put was
all eaten, as far as I could
see, except whole peas and
pernels of corn.
1925. The Red (unmated) ♂
ran back + forth rapidly along the
NW fence as a quail was calling
outside, then twice flew into the
air, and also gave a few "Caw!"
calls. 1944. A pair feeding on green
vegetation in E-9, then the other two
pairs joined them all feeding in a group..
1954. Green-Black pair, apparently
started, ran into tall grass, where
Orange-05 had already gone. The
other pair is in the E-9 Eucalyptus.
Seen is now gone from top of Grizzly
Peek. 2003 A quail giving "Caw!"
call outside the pen. Red ♂ still
Running, others in cover or tall grass.
2007 Single ♂ (Red?) went into
cover, and 3 sharp squill notes
were immediately heard.
