California Quail
May 10. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co.
Followed distant call to bird in large
oak near water pump at 0700. 9
Timed 12 calls to take exactly 3 minutes,
average interval 15 seconds, varying from
about 10 to 20 seconds.
1404 Flushed two pairs plus one
a two more birds along road to Arnold's,
in hairpin curve near the flat. 375'
down the road from the F-1 marker.
1443 Returning, near the same spot
I heard a bird calling below and answered with the Swoon quail call;
after a minute a previously silent
bird flushed from the roadside and
flew down to a dead tree. In the
next half hour, wandering about the
brushy and grassy flat, me 9 cow-
calling nearly continually was the
only quail sign, in this area where
a covey of 75- had been reported
during the winter.
May 11. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County.
0700 Heard single quail calling on this
dark rainy morning. 0715 Six quail
together on road near house; one pair
flew into dead tree and perched.
