California Quail
May 9. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co.
Many "plet" calls and snottlings,
plus other birds on the ground
indicate that 4 or 5 pairs are
roosting together. John Davis has
reported seeing 2 pairs together on
2 occasions recently, all other
sightings have been pairs or singles.
May 10. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co.
0600 Heard first calls of quail covey
near Davis house. 0605 Flushed a
pair near dooryard, another pair
feeding on the hillside nearby,
and heard more birds in brush,
at least two pairs, since one pair
flew a short distance & others heard
running. A lone ♂ began giving
a long series of cow balls, 4 per
minute, from a perch 30 feet
high in a pine tree, at about
0610, still going 10 minutes later.
This accounts for all but 6 of the
15-16 birds previously seen in this
covey. At 0640 the lone ♂ was on
the same perch but not calling.
0642 Saw a pair resting on the ground
beneath an unused sled, while a bird
was giving assembly call from a distance;
another pair flushed from adjacent oaks.
