W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail May 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. a number could be heard in nearby shrubbery, and several were heard calling from nearby. May 9. Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. at 1900 I saw two pairs in the grass along stream bed in the headquarters area; these flew into an adjacent large vale and 3 were seen walking up a large sloping branch into thickened foliage above. One bird was calling from the hillside shortly afterwards; at 1920 a pair was seen feeding on the grassy slope just below Chaparral and Oaks; the remained mostly in an area characterized by Lupine in bloom but did not appear to feed on them but on plants closer to the ground. Later examination showed plentiful Erodium here. at 1937 This pair ran quickly along the path and into the brush; when I approached the area a few minutes later at least 3 birds flew into a large vale, and there were movements indicating a total of at least 6 birds.
