California Quail.
May 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
near the old house. Throughout the
trip the wind was very turbulent,
especially over ridges and an open
slopes.
May 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
Quail were not heard leaving the roost
this morning, but at 0630 I counted
44 (very close count) feeding in
back of the house. One 5 on the
fence was giving what can only
be described as a "horse" cow
call, but otherwise the birds were
quiet. As I disturbed the birds
in counting, about 25 remained in
the middle of the field, the
remainder scattered for cover,
about 12 to 14 in the bushes
near the house exchanged numerous
assembly & grill calls, and at
least two other birds outside this
brush gave assembly calls after
this dispersal. The birds feeding
in the middle of the field were
quiescent, several always to be
seen standing motionless, instead
of feeding continuously. By 0752
nearly had drifted off, only 6 pairs
remaining in the field, although
