California Quail
May 8. Devil's Den, Kern County, Calif.
at the water sites which we
filled at about 0930. We then
went collecting through draws
and look over the hills, taking
5 specimens: #6314 - Ad. ♂,
isolated in crayon; #6315 Ad. ♀ and
#6316 imm. ♀ from a covey of 12-15
that flushed on a low hillside
dividing two canyons; #6317 and
#6318 (Imm. ♂ and ♀) flushed
together from clump of brush; some
downy young were seen under this
brush when it was examined.
Birds except for one covey were
widely scattered and difficult
to find.
May 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo
County. Collecting from Marion Spring
to head of Patuge Canyon and
back over the ridge we obtained
3 specimens: #6319 Imm. ♀, #6320
Imm. ♀, and #6321 Imm. ♂. A
few other scattered pairs seen, but
generally very few could be found
and only about 3 birds heard
calling in our hour of traversing
the area from 2-3 p.m. Then
at 1500 collected #6322 adult ♂
