California Quail.
May 7. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co.
At sunset, drove to ridge overlooking
Marion Spring. Saw at least 5
pairs and one lone ♂ in grass
near top of ridge, or on fence.
Birds were evidently proceeding
across the canyon to roost in
junipers. Last seven birds took
wing as we approached & flew
across canyon.
May 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis
Obispo County. 0540 Many assembly,
cow, and squill calls as quail were
leaving roost at ranch house. By
0615 birds were well scattered with
only distant calls, 2 pair feeding
back of ranch house, and two
males cow-calling from fence posts.
0630 Saw a hawk (Red-tail?) perching
on fence post at far end of pasture
below house. In a drive to fork in
road and back I saw 5 pairs of
quail in the road, and a single
♀ sitting on a fence post at the
cattle guard. She flew about 10 yards
into the grass as I drove by,
with no sign of a ♂ in the vicinity.
May 8. Homestead-Devil's Den, Kern
County. No sight or sound of quail
