W.N. Franci 1963. California Quail May 3. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. I prepared yesterday was disturbed, with several # body pits, general surface irregularity, and some tracks at the edges, indicating much use. May 6. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. At dusk about 40-50 quail were feeding near the ranch house, with occasional assembly calls and a few "cow!" calls from the perimeter. Birds mostly all appeared paired with frequent chases and squall calls as strange males (horn?) approached too closely. May 7. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. Awakened at 0600 by series of "cow!" calls, note all quail had left the coast near the house. At 0625 two pair were feeding in back of the house, a few other visible in surrounding fields, and others heard calling. 1410 Listening from the north ridge of Marion Spring canyon, I heard quail calling from several places over the slope facing - at least 3 identifiable series of cow calls, with other assembly + cow calls interspersed.
