W.J. Francis 1963 California Quail March 5. Hastings Reservation. In large Monterey Pine, remained standing on limb next to trunk. 0756 This bird flew up valley across open field following 3 others heard to fly but not seen. Several calls heard from direction they flew; localized in Ceanothus thicket at dge of oak-chaparral and grassy field. 0828 Observed covey of 8-10 birds in open Ceanothus thicket March 6, Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co. 0607 Heard several calls as soon as I left Davis house in gray dawn - only eastern sky beginning to be bright. 0619 Covey glimpsed in ground in and around Brush. In roost area. 0700 Ob- ser ved covey briefly before it went into Chamise on water-tower hill near shooting site, definite count of 10 birds, 2-5 probable additional in brush. 5 males in one group close together, none in pairs. 0925 Again observed covey in open brush - 8 birds counted. 4 (2 3 2 4) remained standing in a clearing for a few minutes. Calls were heard from two different locations, after which 1 3 + 1 4 moved uphill into brush, followed by the other pair within one minute. 0927 Two more birds
