California Quail.
May 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
and Black had taken pigeon gut
before feeding; all (a most)
birds flew from their roosting
shrub, and settled out of sight
in the grass + weeds. 1958 Some
birds began moving back to the roost.
May 2. Strawberry Canyon Alameda
County. 0607 Three quail seen
along fence in E-1 as I entered,
another pair in E-10. 0625 Green
and Black moved from E-1 to pick
at gravel in C-1. 0631 Heard
quail calling outside. Red ? flew
into the air toward fences in E-1
(without colliding), then began
running rapidly along the fence.
Green + Black also ran along fence
less rapidly; by 0639, Red was
still running continually, Green
only feeding, and Black making
short runs along fence between
feeding periods. Green grass
seemed to be the diet at this time.
Red was tolerated by the other pair
except for a threatening thrust of
the head when he passed within
less than a foot of Green; no
reaction at all followed his close
