California Quail
May 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County.
One ♀ also on ground again. (1937 One
male chased Red ♂ to other side
of the shrub. 1939. Three individual
♂ plus a pair on the ground near
Eucalyptus. 1940 One ♂ flew up
into E. shrub. 1943. ♂ of a pair
flew into E. The lone male came
to its base, looked up, then ran
rapidly to the central clearing and
fell for about a minute, returned
to the E. shrub and flew into it.
Within 10 seconds a male (prob. the
same, now seen to be Red) jumped
down and again ran away. Two
♀ and one ♂ approached, and
one ♀ flew into E. at 1948. I
lost track of the others for a moment,
and at 1949 a ♂ chased another
♂ out of the E. shrub. 1950 One of
the two ♂ flew into the shrub,
followed by a slight commotion,
then the other ♂ flew up. To
sum up, the evening activity:
No copulation, feeding in
pairs, not in groups; aggression
toward unwanted Red ♂ only, and
communal roosting.
