W.J. Francis 1963 58. California Quail Apr. 30. Mayt. Alameda County, Strawberry Canyon, were seen feeding around population pits; a ♂ accompanied by a ♀ gave a squill call to a nearby ♀. A male was seen inside the pen in A-1 near the gate; he saw and flew to the other side of the pen as I approached. 0832 With assembly and are "Cow." call continuing from outside the pen, Red ♂ cautiously from grassy cover into the center of the pen, fed on grain for about 2 minutes, then moved to vicinity of Eucalyptus in B-7. 0855 No activity or calls for last 20 minutes. 0920 All seven birds resting in east corner (E-10). 0929 Heard assembly call outside the pen. May 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co., 1963 A quail called as I entered the hut at the Behavior Lab Pen, and I noted a single male undoubtedly Red saw from B-8 toward the hut, then toward the SW fence where I noted several quail feeding outside the fence. 1913 A pair resting in the grass in A-5, opposite quail feeding
