California Quail.
April 26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County,
without disturbing any birds to see
the other four resting on ground in
East corner, 299 between a 3 at
each end. No change to end of
observation at 1027. 1030 Again
noted single pair quail just
outside Behavior Lab fence.
April 28. Strawberry Canyon Alameda Co.
(Change time to P.P.S.T this morning).
At 1916 I stopped car at the Pine Grove
Picnic Area in Tilden Park, on Grizzly
Peak Blvd, and saw a small covey
in the Pine trees and the grass below
the Pines. One pair were perched
side by side on a horizontal limb;
two males were briefly in the same
tree, then flew to the ground. About
7 or 8 were moving around in
the grass. Four birds conducted a
series of rapid chases back and forth
about 4 times. As I parked the
car and left the area I heard a
series of three "Quail" calls.
At 1915 in the road outside the
Behavior Lab, I flushed 2 or 3 pairs.
