W.J.Francis 1963. California Quail. April 26, 1963. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. Seven birds who flew from the west to the east cover in a bunch, except me & lagged a little behind & loaded corner. I suspect this is the bird which had a lame wing last week, which is now nearly healed. Three birds almost at once ran to the north corner, where the red & resumed fence-patrolling, The other pair (Green & Black?) not clearly seen) ran back and forth along NE fence. These three (Green+Black seen clearly) re- maned in this area, alternately feeding, running along fence and resting. As before the Green & rested more than shunning, the other two were more active! For several minutes Blade & remained very close to Red & running along fence, remaining within a foot of each other & feeding side by side, with no reaction from Green & 10 feet away. 1015! The three birds became motionless and noted, Red + Black together, Green about 14 feet away, all in short (cut to 2-3") grass. 1025 Entered pen
