California Quail
April 26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
The pen, a single bird flew
from nearby weeds over the top of
the pen. Within the pen 2 pairs
and at least one other bird partly
seen were along fence in north corner,
from now down fence to east corner.
0613. Red & calling from E-1, was
answered from down slope, location
of answering bird not determined.
A couple of "squill" notes were
then heard. At 0620 Red &
again started calling (assembly,
with occasional emphasis on
final "cow!" and was answered
by a bird from a direction which
appeared placed it outside the pen;
The exchange continued about
3 minutes. At 0628 another calling
exchange by same two birds. At 0631
I stopped outside the pen and saw
a single & running across access
road into weeds on the hillside.
0640. Outside quail again began
calling; red & repulsed with
clucking, then assembly call,
and two other pairs moved up
from the other end of the pen.
