California Quail.
April 23. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda
County. 1840 Birds in Behavior lab
pen were feeding and in pairs.
One pair along fence in C-10,
a pair next to tall grass in D-9,
and a single ? (Red) which ran
about the pen both in the center
and along the fence line (this
male had mated with the Blue
? found dead last week). Although
there was no sign that any pre-
sence in the observation hut had
disturbed them, all these quail
were out of sight in cover by 1850.
April 26. Berkeley, Alameda County.
0600 saw a covey of 16 on Miller
Road in the Berkeley hills starting to
cross the road, then stopping with
birds all across the road. After
I stopped the car + watched for a
moment, I proceeded, and the
quail flew, mostly into trees in
adjacent residence lots. 0610
at Behavior lab saw a pair on
the access road, who walked into
a weed patch, then flew over
the fence into the Behavior Lab. No
other birds flushed. Approaching
