California Condor Ellen McMillan
2 Sept, 1964
Mrs. Furnsworth came at 8:00 A.M. and took us south
of Rock Coral Camp and on top of Bear Trapridge
where she had seen 9 Condor feeding on the carcass
of a stillborn Calf that lay in the pines on this ridge
this day ago, or so. This Calf Carcass appeared as a
typical leanings. It had been completely skinned
even to the ears and legs down poor the muscles,
all bones were held intact by the muscles and except for
a broken 1/4th or two the spinal Column was in
perfect shape except for its lack of meat. It had
been completely cleaned.
Mrs. Furnsworth said she figured her Cows were
about 1/3 Calved out. She has not been having
unusual trouble with the Cows in Calving even
though deer in the area are being very poor. She
had lost two Bulls within the last three week, one
of which lay 1/4 mile north of her farm and was now
furnishing food for the Condor & Buzzards.
Returning to our Camp at 9:30 A.M. we saw that
the Condor was still perched in the dead pine. This bird
was still preening itself and the Carcassible trite prose
was still visible. The morning was still cold and when
not preening the bird would pull the black stuff of
its neck up over its head where only that Part of
the head from the ears forward could be seen,
Except for this portion of the head all looked Black.
