California Condor Eben McMillan 3 December 1963 A Prairie Falcon was observed circling above the Bog- hole spring at Stone Corral Flat. No Condor were seen, but did I see any fresh carrion, although Vic Nivens, who rides the range for Cholame Rancho said there were cattle dying all the time. Very few of the Cholame Ranch cows have calved yet. Vic Nivens said they should be calving heavy about the end of December. This will probably make additional food, of a qualitative nature, for Condor later on. I will commence watching this area more closely now. Fog from the San Joaquin Valley was standing in the Polonio Pass Northeast of Cholame at 12:00 noon and held this depth for the remainder of the day; at 7:30 p.m. the multiple yapping and barking of a Coyote, Dr. Coyotes, was heard from the hill South of my house. Coyotes are slowly returning to this area from whence they have been almost exterminated by squirrel poison and trapping. It might be that people are becoming conscious of ecological balances, or are Coyotes developing a resistance to poisons and traps? Four Sandhill Cranes were also seen flying high, southeastward above North side of Cholame valley; and a flock of 153 Canada Geese are wintering in a reservoir within 100 yards of the Cholame Ranch Office.
