California Condor Eben McMILLAN 2 October 1963 I drove to the hunter check station where Mr. Pingree and W.E. Nichols, a patrolman for Tejon Ranch, were. Mr. Nichols said he saw a Condor in Pastoria Canyon on September 21, 1963. I drove to the Cattle Corrals that are about one mile East of the Old headquarters, where Cowboys were working cattle. Ray Like, Cowboy foreman, said the Condors don't show up in the Tejon Valley much until about mid-October. He thought they stay most of the year in the Refuge in the Ventura area. Mr. Like told me that the Yearling cattle on Tejon were troubled just how with Pinkeye, and Screw Worms, and earlier this fall season these same Yearlings, or Weaners, had been troubled with Pneumonia. He also said it was the worst season for flies he has experienced. I could see how this could be for flies swarmed everywhere, many more flies than I have observed in any area before. Mr. Like introduced me to Gib McKenzie, a tall, slim, Cowboy of about 90 years old who was born in Tejon Canyon on the property of his Parents, who came to this area many years ago. Gib McKenzie's father now lives in Bakersfield, having moved there in recent years, after living nearly all of his 86 years on the property in Tejon Canyon, about two miles above Tejon Ranch old headquarters. Gib McKenzie told me of seeing 31 or 32 Condor about -
