California Condor Eben McNiillan 7 August 1963 Received letter today from Mr. Burrell Reed of Caliente, Marn County, California. Mr. Reed lives in Caliente Wash about 17 miles up stream from the settlement of Caliente and across the wash from Sand Canyon Store. Mr. Reed writes that he saw 6 Condor on the Caliente Cut off about four miles west of Caliente and on Tejon Ranch Property. When seen there were three birds (Condor) on the ground and three in the air. This was either on July 1st or July 8th, Mr. Reed could not remember for sure which it was. The birds on the ground took off as Mr. Reed passed. Mr. Reed saw Condor on Tejon Property at least two other times, once in 1952. The following is of interest from Mr. Reed's letter. "We also found a dead one (Condor) at that time (1952) and had an opportunity to examine it, there is no mistaking a buzzard for a Condor once you know how to distinguish them." This notation I will look into for more definite records. Mr. Reed continues, "In the late 30's I saw about three in Managerie Canyon 8 miles east of Caliente?" "In 1953 while at a neighbors place a lone Condor flew over, and I really had to talk to keep him from shooting it." I will try to see Burrell Reed tomorrow evening.
