Tehachapi
—continued—
California Condor Eben McMillan 25 July 1963
warden in the Tehachapi area, who had been on
vacation and will only be returning to duty in two
more days — he had no new information on condor. He
did tell me that the south portion of his district
that runs out into the desert area, where I was
this morning, is always a problem with shooting —
The week before his vacation started he made 16
arrests most of which he will get convictions. Loaded
guns in cars — Possession of illegal game and
shooting or hunting for game without a licence.
Most of the law-breakers are from the Los Angeles area.
He did not mention arresting anyone for shooting birds
other than game birds. He is very pleased with the
support he gets from the two judges before whom he
brings his cases, one in Mojave, the other in
Tehachapi. Either of these Judges give stiff fines
for infringements of the Game Laws, Mr. Thorpe
said he would give us all the support and
help that he could, when he goes back to work
next.
I camped at sunset in the rock section one mile
south of the town of Tehachapi — a brisk west wind was
blowing as it was cool.
