California Condor
Eben McMillan
19 June 1963
Said he watched the condor run the dogs away from
the horse carcass and would not let them return
appetites
until they, the condors, had satisfied their appetites.
G.W. Reynolds does not think condor have ever
roosted overnight in the large Valley Oak trees that
grow in the canyon where the Matey home is located.
He will be watching for condor now and will keep
records for us of their numbers etc. as well
as phone us in the event something unusual appears
to take place.
It will be interesting to see if increased interest
in condor, brought on by our visiting these people and
discussing condor, will bring forth more than
usual observation records.
Turkey Vultures
Mr. Reynolds, as did Mr. Del Nero, mentioned
the scarcity of Turkey Vultures in the Hungry Valley
area. Both of those men think Squirrel Poison has
done away with most Buzzards.
I saw several Turkey Vultures circling above on
the mountainside to the left of 99 highway as I passed
out of the mountains and entered the flats via the
Grapevine Canyon.
It was cool in the Los Angeles basin. Smog and
fog was responsible for poor visibility. Clearing took
place as we proceeded up 99 Northward and the
temperature rose. The temperature was 88 degrees in
Matey home in Hungry Valley and 102 degrees in
Bakersfield.
