Gymnogyps californianus June 13/1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. utes. One vulture feeding on calf. The vultures, SE. of Big Mdw. on same perch, crunched flat. Fair S. breeze. 10:36, a fifth sighted in Near Root Tree (4 at adults) One left 30 sec. later. 10:40- 3 adults over Water Tank Canyon; one chased another 3 ± tinier; this apparently is in fun for chased bird later behind the chaser with no reaction. 10:45, 6 soared close over the calf and sighted almost simultaneously. (4 imm., 2 ad.). One vulture began feeding almost immediately. Third adult landed 10:47. 10:48, another vulture sighted- 4 another adult. 10:49- another vulture. Then a raven, shut off again. 10:59 9 crows standing within about 15' of carcass, but only 1 vulture fed at 10:49. Could cattle alarm them - there were some (herd) in that meadow. 6 (5 ad., 1 imm.) perched in the root tree 200+ yds. N. of carcass; 4 in another to SE of meadow (the imm. gone from its perch there). 11:00-13 in air over the meadow area + at least 7 perched (20+ crows). 11:02, at least 6 again on ground near carcass. By 1:03½, 2 more landed. One adult flew at another which flew back over head of attacker & landed
