Gymnogyps californianus June 13, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. only 5 visible in Near Roost Trees 4 more soaring near there. 9:38, I saw 2 soaring & chasing over the Rim to NE. 9:45, only 4 now in Near Roost Trees, at least 1 adult. 1 atop tree on Armundell Ridge & one SE of Big Mdw. still - as 7 perched. Two soared 500' above Big Cave. The rest apparently have gone elsewhere - to more desirable food?. Breeze absent or light, air warm (80°?). 9:50, I saw 2 at 5000' level near Old Cabin - they sep- arated, at least 1 leading toward Whiteacre Pk.. I saw 2 soar 200' over head of Big Meadow, then sep- arete - & I watched one (adult). It soared around & over the Rim near me & at 10:06 alighted on a top branch of Parking Roost Tree. Saw 2 singles & a pair over other parts of the canyon rim, 7 perched in Near Roost Trees (2+ adults). One turkey vulture on the calf. 10:15, now 10 (4 or + adults) in Near Roost Trees; 5 in Near Roost Tree, one on top top. I saw 2 land - two took off as one landed, then the 2 returned & landed singly in same tree. 10:16, the 10:06 one gone from Parking Roost Tree, & one (same?) flat-chested adult soared to W. of Lookout, circled & rose over Rim, then headed S. over Kappa Mts. & beyond (last 10:26). 10:39, 10 perched in Near Roost Trees, 1 to 4/tree. About 3 were croached flat on perch?, & 2 had alighted within last 2 min.
