Gymnogyps californianus June 13, (1946) Hopper Canyon, Cali. In Near Roost Tree (5 in that tree). One imm. gave the backing slope but soared off when 105' from perch, then returned & landed - I saw another hopper once before today (imm.). One adult - flat cheated - saored 200+ ' from me on my level. 9:04, 6 perched in Near Roost Trees, 5+ soaring about in vicinity; occasionally one landed in tree a looks off. 9:07, I saw 2 adults chasing an imm. near Rock Ridge; one adult, then other chased the imm. About 10' multers soared low in Big Meadow area too. 9:11, 7 soaring back & forth low over Arundell Ridge - me was chased from flat Rs. & one lit there about 1 minute later. 9:16, an adult landed near top of Near Roost Tree - an imm. Look off to make way. 9:18, 5 left Near Roost Tree - at least 8 soared around head of Big Meadow, 3 again on that tree by 9:21. One imm. has remained on a branch of dead Rs. about 100 yds. from where I saw the imm. "fed" yesterday - apparently has not flown today. 9:25 - 3 soared at rim level over Big Mdw.; one adult, feet down, descended in a spiral & landed on branch of Near Roost Tree. The birds seem always to dive steeply be fore at swooping up to a landing. 2 were perched atop trees on Arundell Ridge, & another soar ted low near them. Bridge light from E. 9:30,
