Gymnogyps californianus June 13, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. Mdur., Fawn turkey vulture perched in Near Roost Tree. 7:44, this one & another cirr. loured in the large Co. 200t yda. N. of the calf (vacant until now, most used yesterday). A red-tailed hawk was perched about 8' from upper bird & slightly above - no reaction. Upper bird dropped down 6t' to lower & walked into it, wings up. Bath flapped a little, then separated. Then one to other again, they wrestled heads, & one went off of perch while other remained. One crowded adult rose & gave a wind law (7:48). I saw 2 adults fly up to 10t' higher perches in their trees (another bird above in both cases). 7:59, at least 8 or 9 at original position - two or more in air & some trees with 1 now with 2, or having 2, now only one - some shifting in other words. Intermittent light breeze from E. I saw an adult alight about 6' above & on opposite side of bare tree from a turkey vulture - no reaction. 7:58, 6 condor soaring, 100t' over Big Meadow near carcass - faint breeze. At 8 a.m. at least 15 in Near Roost Trees - 2 of lowest birds apparently crouched & on original perches. It seems that condors show most interest in other condors, & a few flying near them stimulates them to activity.
