Gymnogyps californianus June 13, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. Apparently 5-7 minutes is maximum soaring time for condors - tired? Breeze died. About half the birds faced sun, others away or sideways. Scanned the cliffs on W. side of the Sheep saw that the falls at Oil Well Point was dry; could spot no condor tho visibility good in that direction. The deep canyon in the Bear Heaven red rock still appear promising as possible condor nesting localities. A recount from top of lookout revealed 10 condors in Near Root Trees, (3 near or below foot of Big Mdw.), 5 W. of Rock Ridge, x 9 S. of Big Meadow - so 18 around Big Mdw.! One W. of Rock Ridge was crunched flat as earlier - the only one I have seen so this morning (lowest of all the birds too, so perhaps an imm.). So far have seen none shift perch. 6:55, saw 1 sun front for 3+ minutes. 7:00 - two adults (beside other) now crunched flat on their perches. 7:10, one to S. of Big Mdw. apparently shifted from top of a stub to a tree branch. At least 5 condors crunched flat. No breeze. 7:23, saw 4 turkey vultures soaring - more near carcasses than 1 over Near Root Tree. 7:30, I saw a third tree in Near Root Trees with 2 condors (adult below imm.) 7:35-40, one dark imm. circled over the ridge & tree S. of Big
