Gymnogypes californianus June 12, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Cali. Each other playfully - no carrion feeding. A turkey mullet walked up to carcass - immediately two carrion walked toward carcass + mullet walked away (dog-in-manger act). 4:43, counted 22 total carrion, 10 or 11 at the carcass. 4:48, an adult alighted in the green walnut tree near the carcass. 4:49 - all carrion left the ground near carcass + flew to Near Roost Trees - a few seconds later the adult, + a turkey mullet, left the walnut tree - then I saw the apparent cause - a coyote was about 10' from the carcass - The coyote prodded the carcass, then gave a start & ran downhill - perhaps he got my scent on the calf. Counted 23 carrion, 13 adults, 10 min. One was on Saddle Ps., 2 ad. +1 min. in the SE of the Big Mdw., the rest in Near Roost Trees. 11 were in 1 tree 200± Yds. N. of carcass. 4:59, 1 adult was in walnut about 15' above + 50' S. of carcass, perched on a small limb - I saw this bird look down & there was a coyote walking near the carcass. Another count gave 25, 17 being adults. Two of these were on Arundell Ridge in roost trees. Twice today in trees I saw one adult while the head of another - affectionately? 5:15, I spotted a
