Gymnogyps californianus June 12, 1946 Hopper Canyon, G.I.F. 1 min. in tree (80+ dead Ps.) SE of Big Mead, almost 300 yds. on NW facing slope. 4 p.m. - now-13 in Near Roost Tree, 4 with wings spread, sunning their backs (18 total, 5 now in other two). 4:04, an adult+ min. landed 50+ NE of calf - 2 turkey vultures haven't still fed on it. 4:05, adult walked slowly up to carcass & began to feed. Vultures seemed not alarmed but kept 5+ away. 4:06, another adult landed, 30+ uphill from carcass & walked to it - first retired about 10'; second fed. 2 ad., 4 min., 42 vultures near carcass at 4:08, but only occasionally pecked carcass. 4:10, two more adults landed, 30+ uphill. The vultures left. adult+ min. took off from near carcass min. 4 adult alighted in crowded Ps. 200+ yds. to N. 4:13, 10 cinders (5 adults) in that one tree. Now within 20' of carcass than the 2 adults+ 1 min. 30+ away. Two turkey vultures landed at carcass - the 3 cinders then walked & hopped to it. Saw-19 cinders, 10 adults, all told, in a near Big Meadow. 4:19, 4 adults+ 3 min. at carcass, some having come from nearby trees. 2+ turkey vultures perched in the green branches 50+ away. 4:20, a 5th adult landed. 50+ NE of calf.
