Gymnogyps californianus
June 12, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif.
missed & grabbed a 3' lower branch. When
some steadiness regained, the imm. flopped
violently - begging hard apparently. The
tail flopped up & down loosely as the wings pumped. The
imm. worked up to adult's level, then fell 6' to another
branch & then took off. At 10 a.m. it alighted about
30' below adult on some tree. 10:01, a second imm.
alighted, 12' higher in tree. The upper imm. flew to
a 10' lower branch, then walked up to other immature.
Both flapped wings as if wrestling, beside or losing
dalance, then they stood calmly together. The
immature climbed up toward adult. 10:08, both
took off, & adult too - at 10:09 I saw 3 (three
same probably) on the ground at the calf. 10:10,
one imm. flew at the other & chased it 30'
down the slope. The adult was at the carcass.
The chased imm. walked back up to carcass. The
adult fed at oral region, apparently. West winds
& low angle made visibility poor at carcass.
10:12, a second adult alighted 50' uphill & bounced
down to the calf. Another imm. alighted too - 2
adults & 3 imm. at calf. at 10:13. One adult
flew over the carcass at the other or an imm.
(both ran) - and chased the bird 30' downhill,
thin walked back to carcass (other adult
back too). 10:15, an adult flew at imm. &
