Gymnogyps californianus
June 12, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Cali.
Locate it. I saw a large black bear walking with
in 100' of Condon Falls at 8 a.m. 8:30, I saw 2
condor atop Flat Rs. A turkey vulture was
summing its back, wings spread, about 8' from one
condor. The other condor was 5' lower than upper
it clambered, flopping, to tree top & the vulture
flew the condor had not come within 6'. I
saw 2 other vultures soaring near Arundell
Ridge then. 8:38, more visible on Flat Rs.. The close
adult flattened as before. I saw coyote walking
uphill about 300 yds downhill from my "bait".
8:57, I located the second near adult- it was
perched in Near Raset Tree on highest long branch
apparently it had shifted perch uphill about 250 yds.
on SE side of the tree, standing occasionally preening.
The other adult flattened as before at 9 a.m. 9:19,
9:19, the lower adult stood up & preened below left
wing. 9:23, the upper adult took off downhill with
a spring. It soared about over Big Meadow &
Rock Ridge area, then N. to near Arundell Saddle,
then to Big Meadow area again, apparently circling
about 300' over the bait 2± times, then N. to
near Condon Cliff, then S. again and at 9:40 I
lost it behind Rock Ridge as it soared down
Hopper Canyon, low. During all this time
the bird did not flap or act as if striving
for altitude - occasionally a wing dip
